About

Duke Energy Corporation, operating across the United States through its various subsidiaries, functions as a prominent energy provider. The company's operations are structured into three primary divisions: Electric Utilities and Infrastructure, Gas Utilities and Infrastructure, and Commercial Renewables. The Electric Utilities and Infrastructure division is responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution, and retail sale of electricity across the Carolinas, Florida, and the Midwestern states. Its power generation relies on a diverse fuel mix, including coal, hydroelectric, natural gas, oil, renewable sources, and nuclear energy. Additionally, this segment supplies wholesale electricity to various entities such as municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, and other load-serving organizations. It caters to around 8.2 million customers spread across six states in the U.S. Southeast and Midwest, encompassing a vast service area of about 91,000 square miles, and boasts an impressive generating capacity of approximately 50,259 megawatts (MW). The Gas Utilities and Infrastructure division focuses on the distribution of natural gas to residential, commercial, industrial, and power generation clients. This segment also manages, operates, and invests in natural gas pipeline transmission and storage facilities. It serves roughly 1.6 million customers in total, with 1.1 million located in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, and an additional 550,000 in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky. Finally, the Commercial Renewables segment is dedicated to acquiring, owning, developing, constructing, and operating renewable energy projects, primarily wind and solar, along with providing non-regulated renewable energy and energy storage solutions to a clientele comprising utilities, electric cooperatives, municipalities, and corporate entities. This extensive portfolio includes 23 wind farms, 178 solar installations, 2 battery storage sites, and 71 fuel cell facilities, amounting to a combined capacity of 3,554 MW spread across 22 states. Tracing its origins back to its founding in 1904, the enterprise was initially incorporated as Duke Energy Holding Corp. before adopting its current name, Duke Energy Corporation, in April 2005. Its corporate headquarters are located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
